What I Have Learnt From Mapping

Mapping out the film trailers has helped me understand what to include my film trailer. I tried my best to pick film trailers that related to the themes and ideas, that our group would like to base our trailer on. During my investigation, I was able to see the similarities and differences between the trailers and was able to see features that they used which I liked and disliked, so I know what to include and not to include. I truly believe that the features of the trailer truly reflect the genre. For example, the screen writing in a romance trailer would be lower case whilst, in a horror trailer it would all be upper case.

Mapping has helped me find out the code and conventions of these individual title trailers. This is because even though each trailer has its own personality they all seem to have similar characteristics.

From this experience I have learnt that majority of film trailers will include:

  • Identities Logos
  • Film Title
  • BBFC rating
  • Social Media link
  • Sound - Non-Diegetic music and voice overs
  • Release date
  • Names of key actors or crew
  • Time length - usually 1.30 to 2.00 minutes
  • Character and genre identification
This list has given me an general idea on what to include in my opening sequence. However, this list may vary as we may try and add enigma codes to allow our audience to be intrigued. Henceforth, mapping has helped me understand the codes and conventions of film trailers
