Cameron is a bright young student with a prosperous future in mathematics. However, his performance in school is hindered upon the sudden death of his parents along with the already persistent racial bullying and discrimination he endures at his all-boy grammar school. With no other extended family and fear of being separated by the foster-care system, Cameron is left as legal guardian to his also orphaned twin sister, Mya. Among everything, Cameron tries to focus on attaining his maths scholarship to a prestigious university with the help of his supportive mentor, Mr.McGowan - the only person who cares for Cameron and sees his true potential. Despite this, without any financial aid, the building pressures at school and the threat of an eviction notice, Cameron finds it too difficult to cope with everything and drops out of school to make a living and take care of his sister. This proves to be difficult as he is unable to find a respectable job due to little experience and uncompleted qualifications. As a result, Cameron is left with no choice but to turn to and old acquaintance for help, Drug boss Vince, who gives him a job working for him as a drug dealer.
Cameron doesn't tell anyone how he is occupying his time and making ends meet, especially his sister, as he doesn't want to worry her. Instead, he continues to pretend that he is attending school as normal. The plot thickens when the money that Cameron is making isn't enough to live on as well as cover his debts, therefore he takes the situation into his own hands and decides to hide away small amounts of Vince's money each times he makes a dug sell. Vince hears word on the street about Cameron stealing from him and sees him as a threat to his reputation - Vince needs to teach Cameron a lesson to show all his workers that he is not to be messed with; he makes it clear that nobody Cameron cares for is safe, including Mya.
Cameron realises the repercussions of his foolish actions and goes into hiding for the time being. All the while, and little to his knowledge, Vince and his people have had a watchful eye on the everyday movements of Cameron and Mya, planning to do some real damage. After having an expected run-in with Vince and his goons, Cameron is in a bad way and fears for his and his sisters life. He and Mya pack their bags and must go on the run as it's too dangerous to stay in their current living situation. With nowhere else to go, Cameron turns up at the doorstep of Mr McGowen's house looking for refuge and shelter. Mr McGowen instinctively takes Cameron and Mya in - disappointed that he didn't come to him for help sooner. Nevertheless, Cameron confesses what he has done, which disheartens Mya as she feels guilt for being the burden in Cameron's life and cause of their struggles and strife. Cameron reassures her that everything he does is for their family. Cameron misses studying maths and Mr McGowen persuades him to continue working towards his scholarship once more in the pursuit of his bright future and success.
After attaining a place at his chosen university, Cameron prepares to move further up the academic ladder but is hesitant of his family's current financial stability and living situation. He doesn't want to leave Mya behind as he progresses. Mr McGowan understands what Cameron and Mya have gone through over the past year and grows so close to both of them that he offers permanent residence in his home and would like to become their legal guardian.
