Pre-scene -
Voicemail
The
night before Cameron and Mya's parents die, they leave a voicemail message on
the home phone for them. This plays into scene 1.
MUM: Hello
my darlings, your Dad and I are going out to dinner tonight
and won't be back till late so, I've left some food in
the fridge for you to heat up Cameron, and remember, go to
bed on time ok... that means you Mya! [giggles].
MUM &
DAD: We love youuuu!
Scene
1 – Graveyard
Cameron
and Mya are grieving over the death of their parents at the funeral.
CAMERON:
Look at me Mya [lifts up her chin], we're gonna get
through this [forces a smile while tears in his
eyes]. I'm going to take care of you now ok - just you and me...
that’s what mum and dad would have wanted. [hugs sister] I love you so
much.
Scene
2 – Introduction to Drug Boss
Cameron
bumps into an old acquaintance while walking down the street one day.
VINCE
(black screen*): [bumping into protagonist and gives dirty look at first]
Oh heyyyy, Cameron, is that you?
CAMERON: Uhh yeah yeah [mumbling quietly],
hey Vince, how you been man?
VINCE:
Ah my bad man, didn’t see you there. Business is business
as usual I guess. [pauses] How's the
fam doing though bruv?... It's been too
long.
CAMERON:
[hesitates] Me and Mya are getting by... I guess.
VINCE:
Ah yeah um - I'm sorry to hear bout your parents
man. I know times must be tough on you and your lil'
sis at the moment... [look at each other for a moment] Well you know I'm
always here for you my brother, and if you're looking for more than
just 'getting by', you know where to find me - and I'm here for you
anytime" [offers hand shake].
Scene
3 - Introduction to Mentor
Cameron
is having after-school tuition with his mentor Mr McGowen.
MR
MCGOWEN: [hands a scholarship leaflet to Cameron] I know you can do it.
[both
look at white board as mentor hands over pen]
Scene
4 - Landlord Issue
Cameron's
landlord is demanding that he pays his rent or will be kicked out with Mya.
LANDLORD:
[banging on front door] Oi Cameron I know you're in there mate....Oi! [bangs on
door] If I don't have my rent by the end of this week, your out of here.
Scene
5 - Job Acceptance
Cameron
accepts Vince's job offer as one of his drug dealers.
VINCE:
[shaking Cameron's hand] Good choice my friend.
Scene 6 - Cut Scene (drug exchage and park)
Cameron
is talking to his sister in the park. While responding, the scene cuts to him
making a drug deal and back again.
MYA: [innocently] So what did you do today?
CAMERON: Ah you know not much. Same old really... [cut-scene] Got to school a bit late today, had P.E - we did track, Miss Hardy was annoying as usual but Maths was good... went to pick you up from school and now I'm talking to you.
Scene 7 - Trouble With Drug Boss
Cameron
gets caught stealing money from Vince and is threatened by him and
his goons.
VINCE: So you think you can't steal from me and get away with it!
Scene 8 - Incident In The Park
Cameron
is taking a walk outside of school during his lunch break when a group of white
school bully's notice him and decide to physically attack him.
SCHOOL BOY 1: [pointing] Oi there he is, Let's get him!
SCHOOL BOY 2: [kicking and punching while yelling derogatory terms]
Scene 9 - Teacher to Teacher Argument
Mr
McGowen gets into an argument with the vice principal after Cameron is called
into the office to discuss the incident in the park. Cameron is discriminated
against while the school boys who attacked him go unpunished.
VICE PRINCIPAL: I'm afraid no one was there to witness yesterdays incident.
MR MCGOWEN: [shouting] This is pure discrimination!... Where are the other boys?
(Close up of Cameron's face) - [muffled shouting of both teachers is heard in the background].
